Methyl orthosilicate appears as a clear colorless liquid. It has a flashpoint below 125°F and is less dense than water and insoluble in water. Very toxic by ingestion and inhalation and very irritating to skin and eyes.
It is commonly used by research scientists and for paints and lacquers.
Tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) is popularly used in the sol-gel synthesis of silicates and chromium-doped silicates and in the formation of hexagonal mesoporous silica layers. In organic synthesis, Si(OCH3)4 has been used to convert ketones and aldehydes to the corresponding ketals and acetals, respectively.
